Always excited about any new year and the Korean dramas that will be released during that year. But many K-dramas don’t reach the USA viewing audience fast enough! The Witch (2025) – Based on the Webtoon of the Same Name

“The Witch”is a 2025 Viki Original Korean drama series with 10 episodes, categorized as Fantasy, Romance, Crime, and Mystery; based on the webtoon of the same name by Kang Full*.. SUMMARY: For reasons which can not be explained, every time a young girl befriends a young boy, the boy either gets injured or worse, he dies. The people in the town start calling her a witch. But there’s one boy who says that’s not possible. ♦ She’s Not a Witch! That’s Not Possible! In “The Witch”, Park Mi-Jeong, looks like an ordinary girl on the outside. When she was little she was playing jump rope with her friends. A naughty boy ran up and cut the jump rope, and right after that fell into a manhole. The manhole was uncovered but there was a warning sign. The little boy should have seen it and avoided it. Park Mi-Jeong assumed it a just an accident. SUMMARY: My innocent niece found an “item” that washed up on a rock at the beach and she picked it up. Turns out it’s an item with inexplicable power that humans don’t know how to control. Who knew? ♦ The First Time I Saw the Item a Crazy Guy Was Wearing It In “The Item”, Kang Gon is at a train station trying to get the people to evacuate. No matter how loud he yells, nobody listens. In desperation, he jumps onto the train tracks. Nobody I going to leave now. They’re going to hang around to see what this insane man is trying to do. The Sound of Your Heart ~ Laugh Until Your Heart is Content

“The Sound of Your Heart” is a 2016 Korean comedy, now available to the US audience via Netflix. It’s a goofy Korean sitcom, loaded with laughs. It follows the daily lives of an aspiring webtoon writer/cartoonist, his girlfriend, and his wacky family, and is based on Korea’s longest-running webtoon series of the same name. The webtoon has 500+ episodes. But relax. This K-drama series only has 20 episodes, about a half hour each. NOTE: There is also a Season 2, The Sound of Your Heart Reboot, released in 2018, and streaming on Netflix; however, the cast has changed. Cho Seok is played by Sung Hoon (“Perfect Marriage Revenge”), and his girlfriend Ae-Bong is played by Kwon Yuri (“Bossam: Steal the Fate”). SUMMARY: In “The Sound of Your Heart”, Cho Seok has tried and failed repeatedly to get his webtoons published until he finally discovers that writing about his daily life with his wacky family and his interactions with his girlfriend are things people like to read about.

Perfect Family ~ A 2024 Viki Original Series

“Perfect Family” is a 2024 Viki Original Korean drama series based on a webtoon, with 12 episodes, and can be categorized as Family, High School, Crime and Mystery, and Revenge drama. SUMMARY: In “Perfect Family”, life is hard enough when you are growing up in an orphanage. The fortunate ones get adopted into a perfect family. But what happens to the orphans who are not fortunate? ♦ I Got Adopted Into a Perfect Family In “Perfect Family”, Choi Sun-Hui lives a picture-perfect life. But it wasn’t always that way. She used to be an orphan but was adopted by Choi Jin-Hyeok (father) and Ha Eun-Joo (mother), the perfect parents. No really! They’re perfect!! Choi Jin-Hyeok is a successful lawyer, a doting and loving father AND a faithful and loving husband. Ha Eun-Joo is just like a Stepford Wife, except she’s not a robot. Her entire life revolves around doing everything to make a happy home for her husband and her daughter. Choi Sun-Hui doesn’t just have an ideal life at home but she is also a model student. She can do no wrong. Most people she interacts with worship and adore her or at least they make sure they treat her nicely because after all … look who her parents are. Her dad’s a well-known lawyer and even though her mom is now a full-time housewife, she used to be a neuropsychiatrist. In other words, they ain’t dumb. So if you mess with their kid _____. Who knows what might happen to you? Park Kyeong-Ho and Ji Hyun-Woo are two guys who attend school with Choi Sun-Hui. Of course, they are good friends and of course, they both like Choi Sun-Hui. But Ji Hyun-Woo won’t confess his feelings because he thinks he doesn’t stand a chance. WHY? Because Park Kyeong-Ho comes from a family with the same social status as Choi Sun-Hui’s family. So it is much more likely that their parents would approve of their relationship, than if she were to date Ji Hyun-Woo who does not come from a prestigious background. Also, he knows how Park Kyeong-Ho feels about Choi Sun-Hui. He’s head over heels for her. Both guys hang out with Choi Sun-Hui, but Ji Hyun-Woo knows where to draw the line. Happy at home. Happy at school. Choi Sun-Hui’s lived a life of PERFECT JOY. You Got Adopted But I Got Burned. One day a transfer student arrives at the school. Her name is Lee Soo-Yeon and she recognizes Choi Sun-Hui immediately. They were both kids who grew up in the same orphanage and they were very close until they weren’t. One day Choi Sun-Hui announced that she was getting adopted and that was it! Choi Sun-Hui was no longer a part of Lee Soo-Yeon’s life. The little girl was devastated. During the short time they spent together as children in the orphanage, Choi Sun-Hui did a bad thing. She taught Lee Soo-Yeon to play with matches. It was dangerous. But they were young and innocent children who did not understand. The match fire was pretty. But while Choi Sun-Hui was fortunate enough to get adopted and live a wonderful life, Lee Soo-Yeon was not so fortunate. It seems that because she missed her friend, Lee Soo-Yeon played with matches and caused a fire. She ended up in the hospital with severe burns. Were it not for that tragic accident, she would have also been adopted. But nobody wanted to adopt a child who looked like her. She had severe burns, especially on part of her head; and her hair could not grow because the scalp had been badly burned. She wore a wig but when she took her wig off, she looked like a freak! Lee Soo-Yeon grew up in the orphanage and moved out to live with another friend from the orphanage. She made it her mission to enroll in the same school as Choi Sun-Hui so that they could reconnect and she could show Choi Sun-Hui what she had CAUSED. Lee Soo-Yeon’s life was PERFECT MISERY and it’s all Choi Sun-Hui’s fault. Shouldn’t she pay for ruining Lee Soo-Yeon’s life? Lee Soo-Yeon was angry and jealous of everything Choi Sun-Hu had and wanted to destroy it all, especially her relationship with Park Kyeong-Ho. No Way Will We Let a Murder Destroy Our Perfect Family Park Kyeong-Ho tried to get along with Lee Soo-Yeon because Choi Sun-Hui didn’t want to hurt Lee Soo-Yeon anymore. The poor girl had already suffered enough. Neither Park Kyeong-Ho nor Choi Sun-Hui realized how strong Lee Soo-Yeon’s anger and hatred burned within her. Sadly, they would find out through a tragic event. All three of them were at Park Kyeong-Ho’s home. Initially, Park Kyeong-Ho and Lee Soo-Yeon were together and he was putting out decorations to celebrate with Choi Sun-Hui. His actions only made Lee Soo-Yeon angrier and even more jealous. When Choi Sun-Hui arrived, Lee Soo-Yeon was so angry she lunged at her with a knife. Park Kyeong-Ho jumped in front of Choi Sun-Hui to shield her and he died. Choi Sun-Hui was in a state of shock. She went home and told her parents that she had killed someone. She wasn’t the one with the knife, but she blamed herself. If it had not been for her, Park Kyeong-Ho would be alive. It’s as if she killed him herself. Choi Sun-Hui knew her parents would tell her the right thing to do. But that’s not how her perfect parents reacted. They went into PROTECT MODE. Surely it was important to protect their daughter, but they had to protect their home, their good reputations, and their image of being the Perfect Family. A murder investigation could destroy everything! They had dark secrets and a detective looking for one thing, might expose something else. (???) Don’t know why Viki viewers went with the 8.9. Might as well have given it a 9 out of 10 stars. Most of the Viki Original series for 2024 seems to be rom-com. But this one is not funny! The moral of the story is clear. Don’t allow children to play with matches. It’s DANGEROUS!! As soon as I saw the scene where the two little girls were striking matches, I thought to myself: “Uh oh. That’s not good.” Since it was based on a webtoon of the same name, I figured it would be pretty good because most webtoon adaptations are. I recognized most of the actors and actresses in this Korean drama and they lived up to my expectations. The 8 Show – A 2024 Netflix Original Series

““The 8 Show” is a Netflix Original Series released in 2024 with 8 episodes. It is YAKDPSGS. Yet another Korean drama hoping to piggyback off of the success of Squid Game. If you became a loyal Squid Game fan, after the Season 1 release in 2021 AND you’re still waiting for Season 2 which will be released in December 2024, then add this K-drama series to your watch list. Also, if you like Kdramas based on webtoons, add this to your list. It’s based on two different webtoons: Money Game and Pi Game. It is categorized as a Dark Comedy, Mystery and Psychological Thriller. SUMMARY: Eight people must stay in an eight-story building for 100 days to win prize money. ♦ Only 100 Days? Let’s Do This! In “The 8 Show”, it’s a game of survival via a reality TV show. Survival of the fittest. That means you don’t need a lot to live. Do you? If you don’t, that’s good because you’re not going to get a lot. You’re going to be stuck in a building that pretty much only has walls and a roof. Don’t even think about sleeping on a bed. Oh! If you get hungry, or you want to buy some hygiene products or any of the things you think are “life necessities”, you have to pay for them. Where does the money come from? The money will be deducted from your prize money. So before you think: ‘Eh! Toothpaste and soap isn’t that expensive.’ THINK AGAIN!! You won’t be shopping at the local grocery store or pharmacy on the corner. Items you always had at home that you took for granted now cost 1,000 times more than what you would normally pay for them. If you have bad habits like smoking or drinking alcohol. You might think about breaking those habits, at least until you win the money. Oh! Did the person running the game mention that you have pay for electricity? VERY EXPENSIVE ELECTRICITY! Here’s the most important thing. Will the players help each other or become hostile towards each other? At any rate, it’s only for 100 days. Just pretend you’re Rambo and you will survive. Have fun! I confess that I am not riding the “Squid Game wave”. But since I like webtoon adaptations, and was curious to know which actors accepted roles as contestants, “The 8 Show” ended up on my watch list. Also, since it’s a Netflix Original, I wanted to know if Netflix was getting better with its original Korean content. My curiosty didn’t kill me. But then … I’m not cat. LOL. This series wasn’t too shabby, if you like dark comedy. I won’t argue. He’s the director. FINAL NOTE: I also like to share new things I learn by watching K-dramas. Have you heard of the Fibonacci sequence? One of the players figured out how to use that to calculate the prize money. “The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two that precede it. “The Chase” ~ That Happened 30 Years Ago

“The Chase” is a 2017 Korean drama movie, based on the 2010 Korean webcomic “Aridong’s Last Cowboy”, and categorized as Thriller and Suspense, and Crime and Mystery. ♦ Deaths Recorded as Suicides, Natural Causes or Accidents Might Be Murders “The Chase” begins by introducing Shim Deok-Su, who came from North Korea and now owns of an apartment complex in South Korea where many of the tenants don’t pay their rent. He grumbles and complains and threatens, but he usually never evicts them. For some reason crimes are taking place in his neighborhood, and there are tenants in his building who are victims. However the police record the deaths as suicides, natural causes, or accidents. One day Shim Deok-Su visits one of his non-paying tenants. The tenant used to be a detective and tells him that the deaths that are occurring now, happened 30 years ago. He said the police are handling the cases the same way they did in the past. After that unsettling conversation, Shim Deok-Su, realizing that he was an elderly man, asked his tenant to come by his place and check on him. One of the tenants had died in his apartment and nobody knew. His dead body was accidentally discovered. Shim Deok-Su wanted someone checking on him regularly because he did not want to die and others not find his body with maggots crawling all over him. Sadly that tenant could not check him on him because shortly after they had the conversation, the tenant was killed. It was written off as a suicide. The tenant had a friend named Park Pyung-Dal, also a former detective. He met Shim Deok-Su because both came to the deceased tenant’s apartment, at the same time. Park Pyung-Dal also told Shim Deok-Su that similar murders had happened 30 years ago. He even predicted who the next murder victim would probably be. When he described the next victim, Shim Deok-Su jumped up immediately to go to the apartment of the woman he called “Room 205”. He never called her by her name. Park Pyung-Dal followed him. When they got there they found the body of one woman who had been killed. But the woman he referred to as “Room 205” was missing. Shim Deok-Su was going to call the police but Park Pyung-Dal advised against it. He said there is a possibility that she is still alive. But if he calls the police to investigated, whoever abducted the woman might go ahead and kill her. Park Pyung-Dal convinced Shim Deok-Su to search together for the missing woman and hopefully save her life. Pyung-Dal had been after this murderer for 30 years. He knew his habits well and Shim Deok-Su knew the neighborhood well. Together they can find her. 30 years ago, after the 13th murder the investigations stopped. WHY? Not enough manpower and plus, the country was celebriating The 1988 Seoul Olympics. The games are more important than solving murders. Also, Park Pyung-Dal had insisted they were serial murders but had no proof. So his superiors closed the investigation. Last, but not least, the murders stopped. WHY? The answer to that question is unknown. But now, it’s been 3 decades, and the murders are happening all over again. This time, Park Pyung-Dal is determined to catch the killer. Main Characters: Shim Deok-Su (played by Baek Yoon-sik, “The Face Reader”, “Tree With Deep Roots”) Park Pyung-Dal (played by Sung Dong-il, “Curtain Call”, “Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days”, “RV: Resurrected Victims”, “The Grand Heist”, “Han River Police”, “Ghost Doctor”, “Sisyphus: The Myth”) Where to Watch Viewership and Rating: IMDb: 6.6 out of 10 stars My Drama List: 7.7 out of 10 stars My personal rating is the same as My Drama List. “The Chase” was added to my watch list because it was on somebody else’s watch list for people who like the older veteran South Korean actors and actresses. Sung Dong-Il was born in 1967 and made his acting debite in 1987. I usually see Sung Dong-Il as a supporting acotr. This time he was one of the male leads. His performances are always good even if the movie or series is just OK. My rating is the same as MDL because “The Chase” is a YAKSKM. Yet Another Korean Serial Killer Movie. The film was distributed by NEW (Next Entertainment World) but there was nothing new about it. Unless you want to say casting two senior citizens as the male leads is “new”, considering most K-dramas these days cast K-Pop idols as the stars. The Bequeathed ~ Two Half-Siblings Fight Over a Family Gravesite

“The Bequeathed” was released in 2024, has 6 episodes, is categorized as an Occult Thriller, Crime, and Mystery, is based on the webtoon of the same name, and is streaming on Netflix. ♦ Family You Never Knew Always Show Up When an Inheritance is Involved “The Bequeathed” begins with an old man who looks like he’s dying and a shaman is performing some kind of ritual. Next thing you know, Yoon Seo-Ha, who is living a dull, boring, and uneventful life, gets a phone call telling her that her uncle died and she needs to come take care of “family matters” regarding his death. Uncle? What uncle? When she arrives at the village where her uncle lived she is told that she inherited the family burial plot. She is also told that her uncle’s death is being investigated as a homicide. Detective Choi Sung-Jun is part of the investigation team. Great! First, you find out that you have family you didn’t know about, and you inherit a burial plot! Whoopee! Oh well! At least you didn’t inherit debt. But now the police question you about a murder! Can “matters” get any worse? The answer is: Yes. Yes, they can! So you’re at your uncle’s funeral at least trying to be respectful. You can’t mourn since you didn’t even know the dearly departed. But you are at least polite to those who show up to pay their respects. Except for one person that shows up. Some guy named Kim Young-Ho, who is obviously a wacko nut job, shows up at the funeral claiming to be her half-brother. Uncle or not! Half-brother or not! She has lived her entire life not knowing either of them and doesn’t see why they need to be “related” NOW! She only held the funeral services and accepted the inheritance because she was told that she was considered next of kin, according to the law. Fine! She’ll bury the dead guy. But what’s with this half-brother business? The guy is a PSYCHO!!! Yoon Seo-Ha is aware of one “suspected” murder, i.e. her uncle’s death. Detective Choi Sung-Jun is pursuing leads to several suspicious incidents that appear to be connected to the family gravesite that she inherited. When her psycho half-brother, Kim Young-Ho, shows up and demands his share of the inheritance, Yoon Seo-Ha’s dull, boring, and uneventful gets turned upside down. This is just an observation. But it was easy to find lots of reviewers that wanted to share their rating of “The Bequeathed”. Can’t help but wonder if the viewers watched the K-drama series because the storyline is so relatable. How many people find out they have relatives that they didn’t want to know? Frankly, it’s one of the reasons I don’t want to do a DNA test. LOL. Per Wikipedia: “The Bequeathedranked fourth in Netflix’s Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) category after three days of its release and received a warm response in 10 countries being listed in the Top 10 including South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Qatar, and Singapore.” [19] Netflix has no plans for a Season 2.
